Somehow the biggest item on the list survived the weekend. The Chargers never addressed interior defensive lineman, and it is the kind of gap that lingers.
They are betting Schrader proves the room right and everyone else wrong. The Foster pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 5 they get a matchup weapon at tight end at fair value. A real need, handled.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chop Robinson. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board had cheaper options than Blake Corum at the 69th overall pick, and it noticed. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Braelon Allen at slot 105 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They read the board right and Javon Foster was the payoff at pick 142. A need, and now a little less of one.
Sam Hartman in the Round 6 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They liked Cody Schrader enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 226. The roster fit checks out.
