Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Zakee Wheatley got past him. The Dolphins do not have to explain a thing at pick No. 130. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Spending an early pick on safety with running back open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. If Miller pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
That running back hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 11 they get a sideline-to-sideline linebacker. A real need, handled.
In pick No. 30 they get a long-term starter on the line, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
They let Dillon Thieneman come to them and pounced at pick 43. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Chase Bisontis at the 75th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid up for Bryce Lance at the 87th pick when waiting would have done the job. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A edge rusher of that caliber at Round 3, Pick 26 is the definition of value, full stop. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Keionte Scott in the Round 3 slot is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A minor itch, scratched.
They bypassed pressing needs at running back to take Zakee Wheatley, a safety that was not the priority.
No edge and no loss on Drew Allar in the Round 5 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
The board fumbled Dallen Bentley all the way to the 227th pick, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Somehow Cameron Ball was still sitting there in pick 238, and they pounced on premier interior defensive lineman value. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
