The Cowboys did not so much draft Carson Steele as overpay for him, 47 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The skill positions did well by the weekend.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but cornerback.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 24 they get a true top target. The biggest hole, addressed.
By-the-book stuff, T'Vondre Sweat at the 56th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They jumped the gun on Matt Goncalves, taking him earlier than his grade liked. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A conviction pick on Tommy Eichenberg at pick 114 that the board grades a round light. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Braelon Allen at the 124th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
JD Bertrand at pick No. 174 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Carson Steele in the 212th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
