The Javon Foster selection is the head-turner. The Packers reached 33 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. A D+ that will need time and luck to look better.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Williams pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Graham Barton in the Round 2 slot is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They paid up for Malachi Corley at the 64th pick when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 91 with a little surplus value in Josh Newton. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They liked Jaden Hicks enough to skip the value, taking him in Round 3, Pick 30. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Javon Foster at pick No. 95 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Zak Zinter in the Round 3 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots to take James Williams, a safety that was not the priority.
Will Shipley in pick 130 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Braelon Allen this early at pick No. 132. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Good price on Tommy Eichenberg in the 134th pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Edefuan Ulofoshio in the 135th overall pick leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
