Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent pick 212 on Carson Steele, a name most had 47 spots down the list. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Wilson. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
Brian Thomas Jr. in the Round 1 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tyler Guyton is a better player than pick No. 56 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Steal is underselling it; Payton Wilson at No. 87 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They paid up for Will Shipley at slot 124 when waiting would have done the job. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A straight-up fair deal on Jaylan Ford at Round 5, Pick 38, value and slot in agreement. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Carson Steele this early at the 212th overall pick. It fills a real need, too.
