The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Xavier Legette slide 32 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. It nets out to a B-, which feels about right.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
They will need Allen to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 14 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. More want than need.
They read the board right and Bo Nix was the payoff at the 34th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Troy Franklin in Round 2, Pick 13 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Taking Xavier Legette in No. 68 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They took Matt Goncalves at par in the Round 4 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They went early on Braelon Allen in the 139th overall pick, and the value did not follow. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A cornerback of that caliber at pick 182 is the definition of value, full stop. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
