You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Xavier Thomas at pick 212, roughly 43 spots before his name belonged.
Suamataia falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. They punted on cornerback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 24 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
The board had cheaper options than Trey Benson at slot 56, and it noticed. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Somehow Kingsley Suamataia was still sitting there in the 87th overall pick, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They liked Cedric Gray enough to skip the value, taking him in the 124th pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jaylan Ford in pick 174 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A real head-scratcher, Xavier Thomas in pick No. 212 is miles ahead of his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
