Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Patriots were there to profit. Dwight McGlothern, the No. 162 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 193rd overall pick.
They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
The skill positions did well by the weekend.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
You do not let a quarterback like Michael Penix Jr. reach pick No. 34 and blink. They did not. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Kiran Amegadjie at the 68th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It fills a real need, too.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Gabriel Murphy in the 103rd pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Sataoa Laumea in No. 137 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They paid sticker price for Jha'Quan Jackson in Round 6, Pick 5, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Dwight McGlothern was still sitting there in the Round 6 slot, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Fair-plus on Trey Knox, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
