The Chargers' one glaring miss is interior defensive lineman, a need they left exactly as they found it. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
Reaching for Nugent left real value on the table behind him. The Newton pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 7 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid a round early for Kris Jenkins in pick No. 37, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
No drama and no debate, Payton Wilson went about where he belonged in pick 38. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Mike Sainristil in the Round 3 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Brandon Dorlus at Round 3, Pick 23 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They paid sticker price for Matt Goncalves in the 108th pick, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Nice patience on Josh Newton, who had no business lasting to the 139th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Dillon Johnson at slot 183. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Value said wait; Drake Nugent in pick 184 says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
Jackson Sirmon in No. 256 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
