The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. However the rest shakes out, Sainristil at that price is a win they earned.
Small wins on the phones, but wins all the same. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 5 of 8 of the wish list covered.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
They took Troy Fautanu at par in the Round 1 slot, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Xavier Legette at the 35th overall pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No drama and no debate, Bralen Trice went about where he belonged in slot 36. A need, and now a little less of one.
T.J. Tampa at Round 2, Pick 8 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A tidy little value on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 67th pick, a step better than break-even. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Taking Mike Sainristil in No. 100 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Fair-plus on Zak Zinter, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
