Call it belief, call it a gut call, but Tommy Eichenberg at Round 3, Pick 24 is 41 spots clear of consensus, and that is the headline. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
The phones were busy but the ledger stayed level.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 32 they get a cornerstone up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They paid sticker price for Zach Frazier in pick 56, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Tommy Eichenberg in the Round 3 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No edge and no loss on Audric Estime in No. 95; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Luke McCaffrey in pick No. 125 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Good price on Justin Rogers in the 173rd pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They paid a round early for Ryan Watts in the 213th pick, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Mark Perry in No. 242 is miles ahead of his ranking. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
