Somebody in pick 227 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Dolphins sat still while Charles Demmings, the No. 150 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
The Reiger pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They punted on running back, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They left with quarterback solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a rangy last line of defense at a price that makes it sweeter. Need was not the driver here.
In pick No. 30 they get a cornerstone up front, outstanding value to boot.
They let Caleb Lomu come to them and pounced at No. 43. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Gabe Jacas in Round 3, Pick 15 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Chris Bell at the 90th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nothing to complain about; Ted Hurst went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Max Klare in pick 99 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Mason Reiger. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Chase Bisontis at the 122nd overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A real head-scratcher, Drew Allar in the 130th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where DeMonte Capehart graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Nadame Tucker at Round 5, Pick 21 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Charles Demmings at No. 227 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Patrick Payton this early at slot 238. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
