You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took DeMonte Capehart at No. 242, roughly 56 spots before his name belonged. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D- is the result.
The dealing is the wound this class cannot quite close. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback.
Thomas Jr. at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and cornerback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get a matchup problem out wide. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Brian Thomas Jr. is a better player than pick 36 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A reach on Trey Benson in the Round 2 slot; the board had better options right there. The roster fit checks out.
They took Junior Colson at par in pick No. 67, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Gabriel Murphy at the 87th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the edge rusher. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They paid sticker price for Javon Foster in Round 4, Pick 25, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A conviction pick on Jaylan Ford at No. 173 that the board grades a round light. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
DeMonte Capehart in the 242nd pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
