The Cowboys did not so much draft Zakhari Franklin as overpay for him, 55 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 24 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
They did well to land Patrick Paul in pick No. 56, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Ainias Smith at the 87th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value said wait; Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in No. 124 says they were not listening. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Zakhari Franklin in the Round 5 slot is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Matthew Jones this early at the 212th pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
McKade Mettauer at slot 245 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
