The Cowboys put a flag in the ground for Jay Toia, 154 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
However the rest shakes out, Lawson at that price is a win they earned. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped cornerback, which is a strange place to end up. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
Good price on Emeka Egbuka in the 11th overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They talked themselves into JT Tuimoloau at No. 42, and the board did not agree. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Alfred Collins at pick 73 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Donovan Jackson in the Round 5 slot, miles early. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached a country mile for Tosh Baker at the 169th pick, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Deontae Lawson in pick No. 170 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jay Toia well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Kyren Lacy in pick 186 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Ollie Gordon II in the 209th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A need, and now a little less of one.
