The Packers spent real capital to be 37 picks early on JD Bertrand, and the board is going to hold them to it. The math is unkind, and the D+ follows.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
That Abrams-Draine pick is the receipt they will wave around later.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 28 they get a ballhawk on the back end. More want than need.
Kingsley Suamataia at the 50th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A wild overpay on Malachi Corley in pick No. 57, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A need, and now a little less of one.
Zach Frazier at Round 2, Pick 31 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
McKinnley Jackson in slot 91 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A reach for Marshawn Kneeland in pick 94; a little patience would have been rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Khyree Jackson in Round 3, Pick 34 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Darius Robinson at slot 98 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Will Shipley in the Round 3 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They liked Cam Hart enough to skip the value, taking him in pick 126. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Javon Foster at No. 131 squarely in line with his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
A slide stopped in the 134th pick, with Kris Abrams-Draine worth more than the price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Braelon Allen in the 164th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
JD Bertrand at pick No. 168 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A minor itch, scratched.
A conviction pick on Braiden McGregor at Round 6, Pick 28 that the board grades a round light. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
