You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took DeMonte Capehart at Round 7, Pick 2, roughly 76 spots before his name belonged. No fireworks, but a solid B.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a go-to option on the outside, a steep price for the projection. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Junior Colson in Round 3, Pick 2; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Khyree Jackson in pick 87 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A premium they did not need to pay, Matt Goncalves a notch or two before his time. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Gabriel Murphy in slot 90 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They reached a country mile for Braelon Allen at pick No. 125, and the board is aghast. A need, and now a little less of one.
Jaylan Ford at Round 5, Pick 37 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They reached into another round for Phil Jurkovec, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A real head-scratcher, DeMonte Capehart in No. 222 is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Carson Steele in the 242nd overall pick, miles early. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
