The Cowboys bet big and early on DeMonte Capehart, 74 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up. The Paul steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Brian Thomas Jr. in the Round 1 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Patrick Paul in No. 56 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They talked themselves into Khyree Jackson at slot 87, and the board did not agree. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jaylan Ford in the 173rd overall pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, De'Corian Clark at pick No. 213 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A big swing on Phil Jurkovec at pick 231, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
DeMonte Capehart at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
