They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Jaylen Wright, 36 picks early at the 127th pick. Put together, it is a D+.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. It is not that Solomon is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
Newton falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and edge rusher is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
Fair-plus on Tyler Nubin, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They went early on Graham Barton in Round 2, Pick 9, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
Zach Frazier at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They jumped the gun on Malachi Corley, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Josh Newton at slot 91 is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A tidy little value on McKinnley Jackson in the 93rd overall pick, a step better than break-even. The roster fit checks out.
No edge and no loss on Zak Zinter in Round 3, Pick 31; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose OLB-EDGE. Javon Solomon in the 98th overall pick leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
A wild overpay on Daijun Edwards in No. 114, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Cole Bishop while clear needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots sat open.
A big swing on Jaylen Wright at pick No. 127, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cam Hart at the 131st pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Javon Foster in slot 134 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
