The Patriots treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending Round 7, Pick 22 on Jamaree Caldwell a full 75 spots early. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
Getting Belton where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Tee Higgins gives the group a proven body among the projects.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 17 they get a seam-stretching tight end. A clean fit for the roster.
A reach on Aireontae Ersery in pick 38; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid a round early for Maxwell Hairston in No. 69, more than the board wanted. A minor itch, scratched.
They reached into another round for Darius Alexander, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They reached a country mile for Jordan Phillips at the 81st pick, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Donovan Jackson in the 105th overall pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
The board fumbled Anthony Belton all the way to slot 145, and they scooped it up. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kyren Lacy well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
No drama and no debate, Zeek Biggers went about where he belonged in Round 7, Pick 4. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Jamaree Caldwell in the 240th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
