You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Cowboys did exactly that with Darius Muasau in No. 242.
The McClellan value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th pick they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Kiran Amegadjie at the Round 2 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 87 with a little surplus value in Khyree Jackson. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jaylan Ford at the 173rd overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jase McClellan at No. 213 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They reached into another round for Joshua Cephus, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Darius Muasau this early at No. 242. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
