Call it larceny. Max Melton sat on the board until the 171st overall pick, and the Chiefs did not need to be asked twice. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped tight end, which is a strange place to end up. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes. They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
Their trades came out a wash either way.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 31st overall pick they get a run-stuffing presence up front, and a steal at that.
Graham Barton slipping to No. 63 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Roman Wilson at slot 94 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Steal is underselling it; Tykee Smith at Round 4, Pick 31 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A slide stopped in the Round 5 slot, with Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint worth more than the price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Max Melton in pick 171 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Nothing to complain about; Miyan Williams went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Jaylan Ford in the 215th pick, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
