Call it larceny. Jaylan Ford sat on the board until the 223rd overall pick, and the Chargers did not need to be asked twice. It holds up to a second look, which is why it earns the A-.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. The cost of the Nugent reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
The Zach Charbonnet pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 16 they get a press-man option on the boundary at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
The board had cheaper options than Kris Jenkins at the Round 2 slot, and it noticed. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Cooper Beebe at the 71st overall pick, value and slot in agreement. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Brandon Dorlus in No. 78 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Isaac Guerendo in slot 106, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value with a capital V on Josh Newton in pick 137, a genuine coup. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No edge and no loss on Nelson Ceaser in the 139th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They will replay Mason McCormick at Round 6, Pick 8 for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
Drake Nugent at No. 188 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They barely believed it either: Jaylan Ford still on the board at slot 223. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A slide stopped in pick 256, with LaDarius Henderson worth more than the price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
