The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Patriots watched Cornelius Johnson slide 42 picks past his grade and did not hesitate.
For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. The Cole reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
No drama and no debate, Joe Alt went about where he belonged in Round 1, Pick 4. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
In the 27th pick they get a matchup problem out wide. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They did well to land Kool-Aid McKinstry in the Round 2 slot, just ahead of his grade. A minor itch, scratched.
A straight-up fair deal on Devontez Walker at slot 68, value and slot in agreement. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No edge and no loss on Braelon Allen in the 103rd overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Matt Goncalves at pick No. 105 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
They went early on Justin Eboigbe in pick 137, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Marist Liufau at No. 157 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
By-the-book stuff, Tip Reiman at slot 177 squarely in line with his ranking. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value said wait; Myles Cole in the Round 6 slot says they were not listening. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board fumbled Cornelius Johnson all the way to the 231st overall pick, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took Josh Proctor at par in pick No. 245, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
