The war room fell hard for James Brockermeyer, and it showed at pick No. 218: 56 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. The bottom line is a respectable B+.
The Sturdivant pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They will answer for taking edge rusher early while tight end and interior defensive lineman went begging. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The trade work was a quiet net positive.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
By-the-book stuff, Omarion Hampton at slot 35 squarely in line with his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Josh Simmons slid further than he should have, and the 75th overall pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A straight-up fair deal on Malachi Moore at No. 94, value and slot in agreement. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Noah Fifita. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A quiet steal in the 114th pick: Jason Marshall Jr. for less than the market said. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They reached into another round for Akheem Mesidor, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, J.J. Weaver adds an edge rusher and leaves tight end and interior defensive lineman untouched.
They will replay J. Michael Sturdivant at the 131st overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Damien Martinez at slot 139 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
KJ Jefferson at pick 155 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The roster fit checks out.
They liked Billy Bowman Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in the 157th pick. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They took Bru McCoy at par in No. 178, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No drama and no debate, Khordae Sydnor went about where he belonged in the Round 6 slot. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
They paid sticker price for Shawn Murphy in pick No. 193, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached a country mile for Seth McLaughlin at pick 195, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
James Brockermeyer at slot 218 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Corey Kiner in the Round 7 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They went early on Will Rogers in No. 222, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
