Start where it matters. The Patriots took J.J. McCarthy to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. This is how you run a draft, and the A- reflects it.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. Getting Coleman where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
Add it up and few war rooms did better this weekend, J.J. McCarthy and all.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a blindside protector at fair value. A real need, handled.
In pick No. 23 they get a passer to set the clock by. A clean fit for the roster.
A wide receiver of that caliber at slot 68 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
James Williams is a better player than No. 137 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Jha'Quan Jackson in the Round 6 slot, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They will replay Jared Wiley at the 231st overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
