New England Patriots

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Patriots to a B-.

by BBB · 2024 NFL Draft · 15 picks · 4 steals · 8 reaches
Value B
Need B
Trades F
Future A+

Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Patriots, and the value they bled adds up to real damage.

The Sweat steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The Smith pick reads as want over need, and the roster will feel it at safety and quarterback. They will need Rice to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

They punted on safety, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.

Good work on the whole, with safety the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.6 · Pick 6 · Joe Alt · OT · rank 3
In slot 6 they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A real need, handled.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Amarius Mims · OT · rank 24
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Amarius Mims at pick No. 34. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Kool-Aid McKinstry · CB · rank 28
They will replay Kool-Aid McKinstry at Round 2, Pick 15 for years; that is how good the value is. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · T'Vondre Sweat · DT · rank 44
They robbed the room for T'Vondre Sweat here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Brenden Rice · WR · rank 97
A big swing on Brenden Rice at the Round 3 slot, well ahead of any board in the building. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 107
A straight-up fair deal on Braelon Allen at the 100th overall pick, value and slot in agreement. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Jonah Elliss · DE-EDGE · rank 88
They let Jonah Elliss come to them and pounced at pick 103. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 112
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Maason Smith at DT-EDGE with safety and quarterback open.
R4.5 · Pick 105 · Javon Solomon · OLB-EDGE · rank 117
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Javon Solomon adds an OLB-EDGE and leaves safety and quarterback untouched.
R4.10 · Pick 110 · Blake Fisher · OT · rank 118
They went early on Blake Fisher in No. 110, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Justin Eboigbe · DL-EDGE · rank 148
A reach on Justin Eboigbe in Round 5, Pick 1; the board had better options right there. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.4 · Pick 140 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 149
A premium they did not need to pay, Luke McCaffrey a notch or two before his time. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Marist Liufau · LB · rank 165
Marist Liufau at the 157th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R6.2 · Pick 177 · Tip Reiman · TE · rank 182
They took Tip Reiman at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
R7.2 · Pick 222 · Bub Means · WR · rank 245
Bub Means at the 222nd overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
