You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Chargers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high.
Reaching for Nugent left real value on the table behind him. Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
Foster at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster.
If Brock Bowers and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 6 they get a security blanket over the middle at fair value. A real need, handled.
No edge and no loss on Kamari Lassiter in Round 2, Pick 5; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Junior Colson. A minor itch, scratched.
A slide stopped in slot 69, with Ricky Pearsall worth more than the price. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Cooper Beebe in pick 75 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Isaac Guerendo in the 106th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A conviction pick on Marcus Harris at the Round 4 slot that the board grades a round light. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They barely believed it either: Javon Foster still on the board at pick No. 139. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A real head-scratcher, Drake Nugent in the Round 6 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
They did well to land Josh Wallace in slot 256, just ahead of his grade. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
