The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Packers watched Tre Harris slide 38 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. It nets out to a B+, which feels about right.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on linebacker is the choice that costs them. They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 18 they get a long-term starter on the line at fair value.
They paid sticker price for Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the Round 2 slot, and that is fine. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Nice patience on Nate Wiggins, who had no business lasting to the 43rd pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 14 with a little surplus value in Calen Bullock. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Cooper Beebe in slot 50 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They read the board right and Ladd McConkey was the payoff at the 73rd overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Marist Liufau adds a linebacker and leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots untouched.
No drama and no debate, Tate Ratledge went about where he belonged in pick 109. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No edge and no loss on Tahj Brooks in pick No. 135; it is a wash and a sensible one. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
The board fumbled Mike Sainristil all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Julian Pearl in No. 188. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
Bru McCoy slipping to the 192nd pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Somehow Ben Bywater was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 42, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
Dominic Lovett in pick 219 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A need, and now a little less of one.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Tre Harris in slot 230, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
