The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Michael Penix Jr., and the whole operation now runs on his development.
The Barrett pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged. They robbed the room blind at the table, and it lifts the grade on its own. The safety hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but safety.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 9 they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Jordan Morgan at pick 34 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They will replay Bralen Trice at the 68th pick for years; that is how good the value is. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Roman Wilson at the 90th overall pick is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They took DeWayne Carter at par in No. 103, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Khyree Jackson. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They did well to land Will Shipley in slot 139, just ahead of his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They read the board right and Cam Hart was the payoff at pick No. 146. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
A conviction pick on AJ Barner at No. 182 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They went early on Christian Jones in slot 188, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
Isaiah Williams in the Round 7 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Michael Barrett in the 225th pick, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They robbed the room for Jha'Quan Jackson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
