The Chargers worked the phones like thieves and earned a B+.

The Chargers did not so much draft Joe Milton III as overpay for him, 32 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. Call it a sensible B+, earned the boring way.

They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. That offensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

The Franklin value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.

Good work on the whole, with offensive lineman the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.11 · Pick 11 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 11
In No. 11 they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Troy Franklin · WR · rank 24
Troy Franklin slid further than he should have, and the Round 2 slot is lovely value for the wide receiver. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 71
Junior Colson at slot 69 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Mekhi Wingo · DT · rank 64
Good price on Mekhi Wingo in Round 3, Pick 6, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Gabriel Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 83
No drama and no debate, Gabriel Murphy went about where he belonged in the 79th pick. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.17 · Pick 81 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 80
By-the-book stuff, Mike Sainristil at pick No. 81 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Marshawn Kneeland · DE-EDGE · rank 103
A tidy little value on Marshawn Kneeland in slot 106, a step better than break-even. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 121
A conviction pick on Darius Robinson at the Round 4 slot that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.3 · Pick 139 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 171
They reached into another round for Joe Milton III, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.16 · Pick 152 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 159
Braelon Allen in No. 152 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Michael Barrett · LB · rank 189
Michael Barrett in the 183rd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R6.10 · Pick 185 · JD Bertrand · LB · rank 205
They left a pile of value on the table to take JD Bertrand this early at Round 6, Pick 10. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
R6.36 · Pick 211 · Jared Wiley · TE · rank 214
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jared Wiley. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.3 · Pick 223 · Omar Speights · LB · rank 220
A reasonable price with a little left over, Omar Speights in pick 223. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
