You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Chargers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. It nets out a thoroughly average C.
Getting Green where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. They will answer for taking DT-EDGE early while interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots went begging.
Every board in the league had Nugent lower, and that gap is the story.
If Joe Alt and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Joe Alt in pick 5; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Terrion Arnold in Round 2, Pick 8 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Bralen Trice at No. 69 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They read the board right and Jaylen Wright was the payoff at pick No. 87. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A curious use of the 106th pick. Interior defensive lineman, quarterback and other spots needed the pick; a DT-EDGE in Maason Smith did not.
Somehow Renardo Green was still sitting there in the 139th overall pick, and they pounced on premier safety value. A minor itch, scratched.
They barely believed it either: Luke McCaffrey still on the board at the 183rd overall pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Drake Nugent in pick No. 190 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They did well to land Josh Wallace in the Round 7 slot, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
