The Chiefs did not reach, did not trade up, did not blink. They just waited, and Riley Mahlman fell into slot 224.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 32 they get a sticky cover corner, and a steal at that. More want than need.
A tidy little value on Ajani Cornelius in No. 64, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tate Ratledge at pick No. 69 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Dani Dennis-Sutton in Round 3, Pick 32 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nic Anderson in the 128th overall pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Bryson Nesbit at the Round 5 slot is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
The board fumbled Rylie Mills all the way to pick 193, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They barely believed it either: Riley Mahlman still on the board at the 224th pick. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
