Thirty-one other rooms let Rylie Mills slide, and the Chiefs were the ones holding the card at the Round 7 slot. Highway robbery.
They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 8th overall pick they get a long-term starter on the line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the Round 1 slot they get a lockdown presence outside, and a steal at that. Need was not the driver here.
Tate Ratledge at the 64th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Taking Dani Dennis-Sutton in Round 3, Pick 5 is close to grand larceny; an edge rusher that good had no business lasting this long. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Fair-plus on Dasan McCullough, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Ajani Cornelius in pick No. 104 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A wide receiver of that caliber at No. 128 is the definition of value, full stop. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Bryson Nesbit in pick 160. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Rylie Mills at the Round 7 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
