When a board-topper like J. Michael Sturdivant slides to pick 198, you do not overthink it, and the Chiefs did not.

The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.20 · Pick 20 · Travis Hunter · CB · rank 3
In the 20th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Tyleik Williams · DT · rank 32
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 38 with a little surplus value in Tyleik Williams. The roster fit checks out.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Tate Ratledge · OG · rank 59
Nothing to complain about; Tate Ratledge went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Ajani Cornelius · OT · rank 61
Ajani Cornelius is a better player than No. 69 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.6 · Pick 70 · Dani Dennis-Sutton · DE-EDGE · rank 44
They will replay Dani Dennis-Sutton at slot 70 for years; that is how good the value is. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.4 · Pick 100 · Sonny Styles · S · rank 90
Sonny Styles slid further than he should have, and pick 100 is lovely value for the safety. A minor itch, scratched.
R4.20 · Pick 116 · Dasan McCullough · LB · rank 97
A top-tier linebacker at a bargain, Dasan McCullough in the Round 4 slot, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.32 · Pick 128 · Nic Anderson · WR · rank 85
Somehow Nic Anderson was still sitting there in the 128th pick, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.32 · Pick 160 · Bryson Nesbit · TE · rank 164
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Bryson Nesbit. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.1 · Pick 193 · Roman Hemby · RB · rank 198
A straight-up fair deal on Roman Hemby at pick No. 193, value and slot in agreement. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.6 · Pick 198 · J. Michael Sturdivant · WR · rank 96
Circle this one: J. Michael Sturdivant at the 198th pick is a fall that decides a draft. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
