The tape said wait; the Chiefs did not. Savion Williams went at pick 206, a good 74 picks before the board was ready.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Styles. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
A cornerback of that caliber at pick 36 is the definition of value, full stop. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Jack Sawyer in slot 37 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. The roster fit checks out.
They will replay Emery Jones Jr. at pick No. 64 for years; that is how good the value is. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Taking Tate Ratledge in Round 3, Pick 2 is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
You do not let a wide receiver like Tre Harris reach pick No. 67 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Walter Nolen at slot 107 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Somehow Smael Mondon Jr. was still sitting there in the 121st overall pick, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid up for Nic Anderson at No. 133 when waiting would have done the job. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Circle this one: Riley Mahlman at Round 5, Pick 30 is a fall that decides a draft. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Sonny Styles at the 169th pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Dylan Fairchild in the Round 5 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Steal is underselling it; Kalel Mullings at pick 199 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Savion Williams at the Round 6 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
