You can hear the double-takes from here. The Chiefs took Roman Hemby at the Round 7 slot, roughly 35 spots before his name belonged.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Getting Grant where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, quarterback very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.32
· Pick 32
· Travis Hunter
· CB
· rank 3
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary, and a steal at that. More want than need.
R2.4
· Pick 36
· Jack Sawyer
· DE-EDGE
· rank 24
Jack Sawyer slipping to the 36th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R2.21
· Pick 53
· Tyler Booker
· OG
· rank 40
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tyler Booker at slot 53. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R2.32
· Pick 64
· Ajani Cornelius
· OT
· rank 58
A clean, defensible pick in Round 2, Pick 32 with a little surplus value in Ajani Cornelius. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.4
· Pick 68
· Kenneth Grant
· DT
· rank 31
Kenneth Grant in pick 68 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R3.26
· Pick 90
· Dasan McCullough
· LB
· rank 93
Dasan McCullough in pick No. 90 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.32
· Pick 96
· Nic Anderson
· WR
· rank 79
The board had Nic Anderson higher than slot 96, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R4.32
· Pick 128
· Riley Mahlman
· OT
· rank 124
A reasonable price with a little left over, Riley Mahlman in the 128th pick. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.32
· Pick 160
· Bryson Nesbit
· TE
· rank 143
Bryson Nesbit at Round 5, Pick 32 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.1
· Pick 193
· Roman Hemby
· RB
· rank 228
Value said wait; Roman Hemby in the Round 7 slot says they were not listening. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
