Nobody else had Tim Smith anywhere near the 243rd overall pick. The Texans did, by 91 spots, and that gap is the whole story.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Getting Tuten where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
They went 4 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a plug-and-play piece up front, though they paid up to get him.
No edge and no loss on Isaiah Bond in pick 58; it is a wash and a sensible one. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Malachi Moore at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Joshua Gray at pick No. 127 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Bhayshul Tuten slipping to No. 167 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tim Smith in Round 7, Pick 25 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
