They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Jay Toia, 154 picks early at pick 171. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Getting Lawson where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. That cornerback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Landon Jackson in the 42nd pick is fair value, right on his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They reached into another round for Alfred Collins, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
Somehow Deontae Lawson was still sitting there in pick No. 149, and they pounced on premier linebacker value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid a round early for Donovan Jackson in the 169th overall pick, more than the board wanted. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
By-the-book stuff, Dont'e Thornton Jr. at slot 170 squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They talked themselves into Jay Toia at No. 171, and the board did not agree. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They barely believed it either: Ollie Gordon II still on the board at the 186th overall pick. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Kyren Lacy at pick No. 209 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
