Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Myles Harden got past him. The Patriots do not have to explain a thing at the 231st pick.
So much rides on Drake Maye that the rest of the class almost grades on a curve behind him. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get their quarterback of the future at fair value. A real need, handled.
A quiet steal in the 34th overall pick: Graham Barton for less than the market said. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Ja'Tavion Sanders at pick 68 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Roger Rosengarten in the 103rd overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It fills a real need, too.
They will replay Javon Solomon at the 137th pick for years; that is how good the value is. Hard to map this one onto the depth chart at all.
Circle this one: Anthony Gould at No. 180 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Jha'Quan Jackson at slot 193 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the wide receiver. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Myles Harden still on the board at pick No. 231. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
