Give the war room a raise for the dealing alone. The Chiefs came out ahead on every exchange that mattered, and it was not close. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B+.
The Chiefs indulged a want in Smith while a need in quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots stayed open. The quarterback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The Simpson pick is the one they will point to when this weekend is judged.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
They read the board right and Troy Fautanu was the payoff at No. 41. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A wide receiver of that caliber at the 63rd pick is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They bypassed pressing needs at quarterback, interior defensive lineman and other spots to take Maason Smith, a DT-EDGE that was not the priority.
No drama and no debate, Tykee Smith went about where he belonged in slot 94. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Tyrice Knight at the 131st overall pick. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing McCallan Castles in Round 5, Pick 25. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jaylin Simpson in slot 171 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They paid sticker price for Roger Rosengarten in No. 175, and that is fine. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Jalen Berger in pick No. 209 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
