New England Patriots

The Patriots let Allen fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

You build a draft on nights like this. Cyrus Allen had no business being available in the Round 7 slot, and the Patriots did the only sane thing and turned in the card. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.

Every board in the league had Payton lower, and that gap is the story. The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Makai Lemon · WR · rank 11
They will replay Makai Lemon at No. 31 for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Max Iheanachor · OT · rank 46
Value with a capital V on Max Iheanachor in pick 63, a genuine coup. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Eli Stowers · TE · rank 53
The board fumbled Eli Stowers all the way to the Round 3 slot, and they scooped it up. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Mason Reiger · LB-EDGE · rank 147
Mason Reiger at slot 125 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Elijah Sarratt · WR · rank 77
Elijah Sarratt at pick No. 131 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Bud Clark · S · rank 102
Bud Clark at the 171st overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · Oscar Delp · TE · rank 131
You do not let a tight end like Oscar Delp reach Round 6, Pick 10 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R6.17 · Pick 198 · Aamil Wagner · OT · rank 171
They barely believed it either: Aamil Wagner still on the board at the 198th pick. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.21 · Pick 202 · Cole Payton · QB · rank 196
Cole Payton in the 202nd overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. The roster fit checks out.
R6.31 · Pick 212 · Patrick Payton · DL-EDGE · rank 247
Patrick Payton at the Round 6 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · Cyrus Allen · WR · rank 166
Cyrus Allen in pick 247 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
