Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Jets spent slot 33 on Garrett Nussmeier, a name the board had a full 46 spots lower.
The Styles pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. They will regret leaving safety for another day if the season turns on it.
Job largely done: quarterback settled and 6 of 8 of the wish list covered. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 2nd overall pick they get a disruptor off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Jordyn Tyson at the Round 1 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Garrett Nussmeier in the 33rd pick, miles early. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Sonny Styles in Round 2, Pick 12 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Sam Hecht slid further than he should have, and No. 103 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kaleb Proctor in slot 140. A need, and now a little less of one.
A quiet steal in the 179th overall pick: Ar'maj Reed-Adams for less than the market said. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
No edge and no loss on Jaren Kanak in Round 7, Pick 12; it is a wash and a sensible one. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Fair-plus on Brent Austin, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
