The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Patriots reached some 50 spots for Patrick Payton, and value like that does not grow back. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
Landing Rivers that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 31 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They read the board right and Emmanuel McNeil-Warren was the payoff at No. 63. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Value said wait; Trey Zuhn III in the 95th pick says they were not listening. It fills a real need, too.
The board fumbled Chandler Rivers all the way to the 125th overall pick, and they scooped it up. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They let Jack Endries come to them and pounced at pick No. 131. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 171 with a little surplus value in Caleb Douglas. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for J'Mari Taylor in the 191st overall pick, and that is fine. The roster fit checks out.
They reached into another round for Patrick Payton, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
No edge and no loss on Pat Coogan in No. 202; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Logan Fano in the 212th pick, miles early. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Xavier Nwankpa at the Round 7 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
