The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Steelers reached some 55 spots for Cade Klubnik, and value like that does not grow back. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
The McAlister value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while edge rusher went begging.
For all the activity, edge rusher went untouched, which is hard to explain.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.21
· Pick 21
· Makai Lemon
· WR
· rank 11
In pick No. 21 they get a No. 1 receiver, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
R2.21
· Pick 53
· Drew Shelton
· OT
· rank 95
Drew Shelton at slot 53 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R3.12
· Pick 76
· Jake Slaughter
· C
· rank 55
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jake Slaughter adds an offensive lineman and leaves edge rusher untouched.
R3.21
· Pick 85
· Cade Klubnik
· QB
· rank 140
Value said wait; Cade Klubnik in Round 3, Pick 21 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R3.35
· Pick 99
· Max Klare
· TE
· rank 78
A top-tier tight end at a bargain, Max Klare in the Round 3 slot, plain and simple. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.21
· Pick 121
· Bud Clark
· S
· rank 103
Taking Bud Clark in No. 121 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.35
· Pick 135
· Chris McClellan
· DT
· rank 142
Chris McClellan in No. 135 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.21
· Pick 161
· Charles Demmings
· CB
· rank 149
The board had Charles Demmings higher than the 161st pick, and the cornerback fell to them anyway. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R6.35
· Pick 216
· Le'Veon Moss
· RB
· rank 208
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Le'Veon Moss at Round 6, Pick 35 is the proof. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.8
· Pick 224
· Owen Heinecke
· LB
· rank 238
They jumped the gun on Owen Heinecke, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.14
· Pick 230
· Eric McAlister
· WR
· rank 197
They barely believed it either: Eric McAlister still on the board at the 230th overall pick. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.21
· Pick 237
· Miller Moss
· QB
· rank 250
They went early on Miller Moss in slot 237, and the value did not follow. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
