New England Patriots

Haulcy should have been long gone. The Patriots pounced, and earned a B.

The board owed the Patriots one, and it paid up: A.J. Haulcy, the No. 50 name on the board, sitting there at pick 125 like a gift left on the doorstep. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

The interior defensive lineman hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Akheem Mesidor · DL-EDGE · rank 37
In slot 31 they get a bendy edge with upside. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Emmanuel Pregnon · OG · rank 39
Taking Emmanuel Pregnon in the 63rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; an offensive lineman that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Eli Stowers · TE · rank 53
Circle this one: Eli Stowers at No. 95 is a fall that decides a draft. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · A.J. Haulcy · S · rank 50
They barely believed it either: A.J. Haulcy still on the board at pick No. 125. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Jake Golday · OLB · rank 59
Jake Golday at the Round 4 slot is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Aamil Wagner · OT · rank 173
They paid sticker price for Aamil Wagner in pick 171, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · Keagen Trost · OT · rank 182
A quiet steal in the 191st pick: Keagen Trost for less than the market said. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.17 · Pick 198 · Taylen Green · QB · rank 188
Taylen Green at Round 6, Pick 17 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.21 · Pick 202 · Cole Payton · QB · rank 198
Cole Payton in the 202nd pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.31 · Pick 212 · Domani Jackson · CB · rank 176
Domani Jackson in slot 212 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · Tyren Montgomery · WR · rank 215
Tyren Montgomery at the Round 7 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
