New England Patriots

The Patriots cashed the board's mistake on Abney II: B.

For all the boxes ticked, the Patriots skipped the loudest one: edge rusher is exactly as bare as it was. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.

They banked enough surplus on Abney II to cover a lot of smaller sins. Reaching for Crownover left real value on the table behind him.

They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Jordyn Tyson · WR · rank 21
In slot 31 they get a matchup problem out wide, and a steal at that. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.31 · Pick 63 · Keith Abney II · CB · rank 44
Keith Abney II at pick No. 63 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · Elijah Sarratt · WR · rank 77
Taking Elijah Sarratt in the 95th pick is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Jack Endries · TE · rank 122
A tidy little value on Jack Endries in the Round 4 slot, a step better than break-even. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Dametrious Crownover · OT · rank 145
They jumped the gun on Dametrious Crownover, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Caleb Douglas · WR · rank 165
Caleb Douglas in pick 171 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · Keagen Trost · OT · rank 186
Keagen Trost at No. 191 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R6.17 · Pick 198 · Taylen Green · QB · rank 190
They let Taylen Green come to them and pounced at pick 198. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.21 · Pick 202 · Cole Payton · QB · rank 199
Fair-plus on Cole Payton, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A need, and now a little less of one.
R6.31 · Pick 212 · David Gusta · DT · rank 208
David Gusta at slot 212 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · Eli Heidenreich · WR · rank 241
Eli Heidenreich at the Round 7 slot nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
