New England Patriots

The Patriots let Haulcy fall into their laps, and walked away with a B-.

The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: A.J. Haulcy, the No. 50 name on the board, in the 95th overall pick. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B-.

They will need Iheanachor to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Value over need was the throughline, for better and worse. The phones were busy but the ledger stayed level.

Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.31 · Pick 31 · Max Iheanachor · OT · rank 47
In No. 31 they get an anchor for the offensive line, reach and all. A real need, handled.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Dani Dennis-Sutton · DE-EDGE · rank 85
A reach on Dani Dennis-Sutton in the 69th pick; the board had better options right there. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.31 · Pick 95 · A.J. Haulcy · S · rank 50
They barely believed it either: A.J. Haulcy still on the board at the 95th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Sam Roush · TE · rank 94
They read the board right and Sam Roush was the payoff at the Round 4 slot. The roster fit checks out.
R4.25 · Pick 125 · Ja'Kobi Lane · WR · rank 102
They will replay Ja'Kobi Lane at Round 4, Pick 25 for years; that is how good the value is. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · Nicholas Singleton · RB · rank 112
Somehow Nicholas Singleton was still sitting there in pick No. 131, and they pounced on premier running back value. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.31 · Pick 171 · Zxavian Harris · DT · rank 156
A tidy bit of business in slot 171, where Zxavian Harris graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.10 · Pick 191 · Taylen Green · QB · rank 190
No edge and no loss on Taylen Green in pick 191; it is a wash and a sensible one. It fills a real need, too.
R6.17 · Pick 198 · Kaleb Elarms-Orr · LB · rank 180
Kaleb Elarms-Orr in Round 6, Pick 17 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R6.21 · Pick 202 · Jeff Caldwell · WR · rank 192
Jeff Caldwell at the 202nd pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.31 · Pick 212 · Aaron Graves · DT · rank 207
Fair-plus on Aaron Graves, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.31 · Pick 247 · TJ Hall · CB · rank 223
A cornerback of that caliber at slot 247 is the definition of value, full stop. A minor need, but a need all the same.
