The Dolphins spent real capital to be 131 picks early on Eric Gentry, and the board is going to hold them to it.
The McNeil-Warren value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game. Quarterback was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
The Tyrone Wheatley Jr. deal gives the class an established piece to lean on.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 11 they get a lead back with juice, outstanding value to boot. A real need, handled.
Emmanuel Pregnon at the 43rd pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They reached a country mile for Dani Dennis-Sutton at pick No. 48, and the board is aghast. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jacob Rodriguez is a better player than the 87th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
You do not let a cornerback like Keionte Scott reach slot 91 and blink. They did not. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Emmanuel McNeil-Warren in No. 92, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
Treydan Stukes at Round 4, Pick 12 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A real head-scratcher, Mason Reiger in the Round 4 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Joe Royer in slot 128 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Zxavian Harris well ahead of where he belonged. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A straight-up fair deal on Drew Allar at pick No. 151, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They talked themselves into Taylen Green at the 152nd pick, and the board did not agree. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Charles Demmings slipping to the 165th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Taking Domani Jackson in pick 199 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
They went early on Lander Barton in the 215th pick, and the value did not follow. The roster fit checks out.
Robert Spears-Jennings in slot 220 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Eric Gentry this early at pick 221. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Bryce Foster at pick No. 227 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Noah Thomas. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Hykeem Williams at No. 246 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They reached into another round for Caleb Douglas, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Joshua Braun at Round 7, Pick 41 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
