The tape said wait; the Texans did not. Isaiah Davis went at the Round 7 slot, a good 59 picks before the board was ready. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
The Thrash pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The trade table is where this weekend went wrong.
The Texans paired the rookies with proven help, Jalen Ramsey leading the way. They left with running back solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
Bottom line, they will be counting on several picks to beat their grades.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 26 they get a problem off the edge at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the Round 1 slot they get a disruptive interior force. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Keon Coleman at the 34th pick, value and slot in agreement. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Value said wait; Cooper Beebe in Round 2, Pick 5 says they were not listening. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Javon Foster at the 43rd pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Quinyon Mitchell in pick 77 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Maason Smith in slot 79 is fair value, right on his grade. The roster reasoning here is anyone's guess.
No drama and no debate, TreVeyon Henderson went about where he belonged in the 82nd overall pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached into another round for Jordan Travis, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They reached a country mile for Junior Colson at pick No. 97, and the board is aghast. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good price on Brenden Rice in No. 117, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
James Williams at the Round 4 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A reach for Payton Wilson in the Round 4 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A conviction pick on Theo Johnson at pick 166 that the board grades a round light. A need, and now a little less of one.
Isaiah Davis at pick No. 234 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Jamari Thrash at the 238th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
